Sample Required:
This test requires a blood sample. About 6 mL to 10 mL of whole blood is collected in an EDTA tube and kept at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) until it is processed in the laboratory.
Test Time:
The blood draw takes only a few minutes. Once the sample reaches the lab, the results are usually available within 8 to 12 working days.
Test Normal Range:
There is no fixed “normal range” for this test. The results will indicate whether specific DPYD gene variants linked to fluoropyrimidine drug toxicity are present.
What is the Test?
This test looks for changes in the DPYD gene, which helps break down certain chemotherapy medicines such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and capecitabine. Some people have DPYD variants that make it difficult for their body to process these drugs, increasing the risk of severe side effects. This test helps doctors adjust the treatment plan to improve safety.
Test Procedure:
A healthcare professional draws a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The laboratory then analyses the DNA in your blood to detect DPYD gene variations that may affect how your body handles fluoropyrimidine chemotherapy.
When to Take the Test:
Doctors usually recommend this test before starting fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy. It may also be advised if a patient has previously experienced unexpected or severe reactions to these medicines.
Who Should Take This Test:
Individuals preparing to begin treatment with 5-FU or capecitabine, and those who have had adverse or unusual reactions to these chemotherapy drugs.
Precautions for Exceptional Cases (Pregnancy, etc.):
If you are pregnant or have major medical conditions, inform your healthcare provider before the test. A 24-hour gap from chemotherapy, radiation, PET/CT scans, or blood transfusion is preferred but not mandatory.
