Sample Required:
This test requires a blood sample. About 6 mL to 10 mL of whole blood is collected in an EDTA tube and kept at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) before it is processed by the laboratory.
Test Time:
The blood draw takes only a few minutes. Once the sample reaches the lab, the results are typically available within 8 to 12 working days.
Test Normal Range:
There is no fixed “normal range” for this test. Instead, the results show whether a person carries specific UGT1A1 gene variants associated with Gilbert syndrome.
What is the Test?
This test checks for changes in the UGT1A1 gene, which plays a key role in processing bilirubin in the body. Variants in this gene can cause Gilbert syndrome, a mild condition where bilirubin levels rise and may cause occasional jaundice. The test also helps assess the risk of side effects from certain medicines, such as irinotecan (a chemotherapy drug).

A healthcare professional draws a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The laboratory then analyses your DNA using specialised techniques to identify any UGT1A1 gene variations.
When to Take the Test:
Doctors may recommend this test if you have unexplained high bilirubin levels, symptoms of mild jaundice, or before starting certain medications that rely on the UGT1A1 enzyme for safe breakdown.
Who Should Take This Test:
Individuals with suspected Gilbert syndrome, those with fluctuating bilirubin levels, and patients who are about to begin treatments like irinotecan that can be affected by UGT1A1 gene changes.
Precautions for Exceptional Cases (Pregnancy, etc.):
If you are pregnant or living with certain medical conditions, inform your healthcare provider before the test. A 24-hour gap from chemotherapy, radiation, PET/CT scans, or blood transfusion is preferred but not mandatory.
