What is the test?
Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the prostate gland and surrounding pelvic structures. Test Procedure:
During a TRUS, the patient lies on their side with their knees drawn up towards their chest. A lubricated ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the rectum. The probe emits sound waves, which bounce back to create real-time images of the prostate and nearby tissues on a computer screen. The procedure is generally well-tolerated and causes minimal discomfort.
When to take the test?
A doctor may recommend a TRUS if there are symptoms or concerns related to the prostate, such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, blood in the urine, or abnormal findings on a routine digital rectal examination (DRE).
